Basil is at the heart of what we do. To us this means bringing quality to our products,
working hand-in-hand with our basil farmers, and protecting biodiversity.

Discover Carta del Basilico Barilla: the story of our sustainability journey, through which we have 3 main commitments: sourcing our basil from sustainable agriculture; the protection of biodiversity and empowering farming communities.

1
BASIL FROM SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

Since 2020, our basil has been sourced from sustainable agriculture.
This means that each participant in our basil-pesto supply chain is annually audited under the sustainability criteria of the ISCC PLUS Certification Scheme.
TO LEARN MORE

The ISCC PLUS Certification Scheme is a voluntary scheme used across the globe.
It monitors the sustainable management in the food sectors. According to this certification scheme, sustainability means to guarantee the conservation of biodiversity areas, the preservation of carbon sink, and the adoption of the European Good Agricultural Practices and Traceability through segregation.

2
MORE SPACE FOR BIODIVERSITY

To us caring about our basil means caring about the fields on which it is grown. Beyond the certification, we preserve soil health by ensuring continuous crop rotation and biodiversity areas. In this way, fertility is increased and pests are reduced.
TO LEARN MORE

All our basil farmers adopt a specific crop rotation plan, dedicating 3% of their fields of their Barilla basil supply chain fields to the cultivation of plants that promote biodiversity, providing shelter to insects essential for the ecosystem.

3
OUR FARMERS OUR FAMILY

We have forged multi-year ties with our farmers to grow stronger together: we can trust our farmers' high-quality products and they can plan the use of their resources more confidently.
TO LEARN MORE

Knowing that basil farmers often have to work without long-term contracts and are exposed to a high level of uncertainty and risk, we have signed multi-year contracts with each of them. Meaning they can have the certainty of safe income for the following years and can better plan their costs and investments.

THE CERTIFICATION SCHEME The ISCC PLUS scheme (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) is a food product version of the ISCC traceability and sustainability certification. It is voluntary and allows us to monitor and certify each participant in our basil supply-chain through the control of its sustainability and traceability rules.

To learn out more visit https://www.iscc-system.org/ .

THE CERTIFICATION BODY RINA is an independent certification body that performs annual audits for every participant in our basil-pesto supply chain. These audits are carried out to ensure that all the parameters of the ISCC PLUS certification scheme are fully respected and certified throughout our entire supply chain, from fields to production plant.

OUR SCIENTIFIC PARTNER

The University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna) is our scientific partner in this project. They validated the advantages provided by the Carta del Basilico project in terms of Biodiversity and in defining the most efficient program to protect basil from disease.

The Centro di Ricerca e Sperimentazione Agricola di Albenga (CERSAA) is our scientific partner in this project. It is one of the main Italian centres of expertise for basil farming. Cersaa has supported us in developing sustainable basil practices and in defining each year the most efficient program to protect our basil from diseases.

metodo delicato

Our new Pesto Barilla is carefully prepared with quality ingredients, following a new delicate method: metodo delicato.

GENTLE PREPARATION

To prepare our creamy recipes, we mix all the ingredients at a cool temperature until they reach the perfect consistency, preserving the ingredients' original colour.

We also created a more textured range, our Pesto Rustico! For these recipes we dice and sautè our vegetables at a low and controlled temperature to maintain their natural texture and appearance.

Within our plant in Rubbiano, to preserve the natural aroma of the PDO Parmigiano Reggiano we buy it in whole wheels and grate it just before adding it to our classic Pesto alla Genovese.

A QUICK & MILD HEAT TREATMENT

Quality first! The heat treatment is a technique used to guarantee 100% safe preservation and quality throughout the shelf-life. In our case, Pesto undergoes a quick and delicate one thanks to cutting-edge techniques.

IN AS LITTLE TIME AS POSSIBLE

It’s important for us to prepare ingredients rapidly to avoid stressing them too much. From when the ingredients begin their preparation, to when the Pesto jar lid has been closed, the process takes less than three hours!
