BASIL FROM SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
Since 2020 our basil comes from sustainable agriculture! This means that every actor in our basil supply chain is subjected to checks annually and is required to comply with the sustainability criteria of the ISCC PLUS certification system .
TO DISCOVER MORE

The ISCC PLUS certification system is voluntary in nature and is used internationally to ensure compliance with sustainability standards in the food sectors. According to this certification system, being sustainable means guaranteeing: the conservation of areas of biodiversity, the conservation of areas with a high carbon content, the adoption of European Good Agricultural Practices and traceability through the segregation method.

MORE SPACE FOR BIODIVERSITY
For us, taking care of our basil means taking care of the fields where it is grown . In addition to certification, we protect soil health through continuous crop rotation and areas of biodiversity . In this way it is possible to increase the fertility of the soil containing and the presence of parasites .
TO DISCOVER MORE ON

All our basil fields adopt a specific crop rotation producer plan and reserve 3% of their fields dedicated to Barilla basil for the cultivation of plants and flowers, they promote biodiversity, thus providing insects, essential for the ecosystem.

3
OUR FARMERS, OUR FAMILY
We have built bonds with our beings that last for years and with them we have grown and improved: we can trust the quality of their raw materials and they can use their work with greater safety.
TO KNOW MORE

Aware of the fact that basil producers often find themselves working without a long-term contract and are exposed to a high level of uncertainty and risk, we have decided to sign long-term contracts with them. In this way, they are guaranteed to obtain a certain income for the following years and can allow investments to be made in the best possible way.

THE CERTIFICATION SYSTEM
The ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) system is a food extension, linked to the scope, of the ISCC traceability and sustainability certification. It is assigned on a voluntary basis, and allows us to monitor that each player in our supply chain complies with the sustainability and traceability criteria of this scheme.

For more information, visit the sitehttps://www.iscc-system.org/.

CERTIFICATION BODY
RINA is an independent certification body that carries out annual audits to every actor in our basil supply chain. These audits are carried out to ensure that all the parameters of the ISCC PLUS certification system are respected and certified throughout our supply chain: from the production plant.

For more information, you can visit the site https://www.rina.org/it/business/human-capital/certification.

OUR SCIENTIFIC PARTNERS

The Agricultural Research and Experimentation Center of Albenga (CeRSAA) and the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences of the University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum) are our scientific partners in this project.

The Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences of the University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum) validated the benefits provided by the Basil Paper project in terms of Biodiversity and supported us in defining the most efficient program to protect basil from disease.

CeRSAA is one of the main Italian centers of competence for the cultivation of basil and has helped us in the development of sustainable practices and in the annual definition of the most effective program to protect basil from diseases.

delicate method

Our new Barilla Pesto is prepared with care, with quality ingredients and following a single password: delicacy .

DELICATE PREPARATION

The secret blend of the unique creaminess of our Pesto lies in the delicate preparation: all the ingredients are healthy until we obtain a creamy and homogeneous emulsion. Furthermore, to best preserve the aroma, color and original taste of the ingredients , we always mix them cold . Of course the raw material is equally important: our basil is picked at dawn to get fresh in our factory in Rubbiano and, to preserve the natural aroma of Parmigiano Reggiano DOP , directly acquiring the whole forms and grate it just before adding it to our Pesto alla Genovese.

QUICK AND DELICATE HEAT TREATMENT

Quality first of all! Heat treatment is a technique used to ensure preservation and 100% safe quality in all phases of the product's life. In our case, the Pesto undergoes a rapid and delicate use heat treatment thanks to avant-garde techniques .

IN THE LESS TIME POSSIBLE

It is important for us to prepare the ingredients as quickly as possible so as not to risk damaging them. Between the moment the ingredients start to be prepared and the moment the pesto is put in the jar, it takes less than three hours!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF BARILLA PESTO BASIL?

Every year, more than 7,000 tons of basil arrive in our factory in Rubbiano, which is then combined with the other ingredients and transformed into our Barilla Pesto. Every single basil leaf that comes into our Barilla Pesto is 100% Italian and comes mainly from fields and situations near our factories to minimize the time between harvesting and processing.

IS THERE GLUTEN IN BARILLA PESTI?

All our Pesto are gluten free and are suitable for those who are intolerant to gluten.

DOES THE USE OF BASIL FROM SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE IMPACT THE TASTE OF BARILLA PESTO?

At Barilla, we have very high food safety and quality standards for our products and we do not accept this. In fact, we have been able to certify our basil from sustainable agriculture while preserving the quality of our Pestos and their delicious taste!

WHICH BARILLA PESTI ARE PRODUCED WITH BASIL FROM SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE?

With the exception of the Pesto Recipe Gourmet which is still in the ISCC PLUS certification phase, all our Barilla Pestos containing basil are produced with "basil from sustainable agriculture". However, we have decided to apply the entire "basil from sustainable agriculture" logo only to the labels of Pesto alla Genovese, Pesto alla Genovese without garlic and Pesto Basilico and Rucola.
