Nutritional Sauce-Ups


If getting your family to eat enough vegetables with their dinner is no small task, try sneaking them into one of these ready-made pasta sauces. This super-simple trick adds more antioxidants and vitamins to the already flavorful sauce. The best part? No one will notice the difference! (We promise.)

Pair each sauce-up with your family’s favorite Barilla pasta.

Veggie-Packed Marinara Sauce

The good news about sweet potatoes, bell peppers and carrots? Their colors and flavors blend right into Barilla Marinara sauce. Steam or roast 4 cups of these diced vegetables until very tender, and puree with the sauce until smooth.

Mostly Mushroom Sauce

Who says vegetables have to disappear into pasta sauce? Give Barilla Mushroom sauce an extra boost by simmering it on medium-low with 2 cups very thinly sliced mushrooms and 1 cup diced onion in a saucepan until tender. 

Bell Pepper Tomato & Basil Sauce

Bell pepper strips add a nice zing to Barilla Tomato & Basil sauce. In a medium saucepan combine the sauce with 2 cups frozen bell pepper strips; warm over medium-low heat until peppers are tender. If your picky eaters don’t like chunky sauce, puree until smooth.

Spinach Basil Pesto

Pack some extra green into Barilla Traditional Basil Pesto. In a blender add 4 cups of baby spinach for every 2 cups of sauce; puree until very smooth.

Cauliflower Alfredo Sauce

Steamed or roasted cauliflower has a relatively neutral flavor, so it hides well in Barilla Garlic Alfredo sauce. Once 2 cups of the cauliflower florets are very tender, puree with the sauce and warm through. No one will know your secret!

Kale Mini Meatball Sauce

Hiding greens in meatballs is easy: In a food processor finely chop 2 cups loosely packed kale, and stir it into your favorite meatball recipe. After cooking the mini meatballs, keep them warm in a saucepan with a jar of Barilla Traditional sauce until ready to serve.
