This Barilla Gemelli Pasta with Sausage, Lemon, and Brussels Sprouts is a vibrant, hearty dish that brings together bold and refreshing flavors. The corkscrew-shaped Gemelli captures a savoury sauce made from browned sausage, fresh lemon juice, and fragrant garlic. 1 box | Barilla Gemelli pasta |
454 g | mild Italian sausage |
1 tbsp | olive oil |
2 | shallots, chopped |
2-3 | garlic cloves, minced |
1/2 tsp | crushed red pepper flakes |
350 g-375 g | Brussels sprouts, thinly sliced |
1 | lemon, zested |
1/2 | lemon, juiced |
3/4 cup | Parmigiano Reggiano, grated |

Method
Step 1
Bring a large pot of water to boil. Add Barilla Gemelli pasta and cook for 2 minutes less than package instructions.
Step 2
In a large pan over medium heat, cook the sausage for about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste and set aside on a plate.
Step 3
In the same pan, add the olive oil, shallots, garlic, and red pepper flakes. Season with salt and sauté for 2-3 minutes. Add the sliced Brussels sprouts and sauté for another 5 minutes.
Step 4
Transfer the cooked pasta directly into the pan, reserving ¼ cup of the pasta water. Add the cooked sausage, lemon zest, lemon juice, and Parmigiano Reggiano. Season generously with salt.
Step 5
Cook for 1 more minute, adding a bit of pasta water as needed.
Step 6
Serve in bowls and top with grated Parmigiano Reggiano and freshly ground pepper.
